Letters and Social Aims
Boston: James R. Osood, 1876. First Edition; BAL’s probable earliest state of page 209. Meyerson’s identified second printing, differing in the spelling of a single word. Publisher’s greyish brown cloth; about fine. Tipped into this copy is a tipped-in inscription in Emerson’s hand, “T.G. Appleton, Esq. from the Author.” The recipient was likely Thomas Gold Appleton, a prominent Boston attorney and literary figure, Longfellow’s brother-in-law. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
