Very minor rubbing; Blairholme bookplates onside the cover of each volume; some hinges weak; in a custom cloth slipcase. This copy is in the blue cloth noted by Sadleir, who also reported two other colors. This was the author’s final novel in a writing career that began with his retirement from law due to weak health. The pinnacle of that writing career was reached with the publication of Lorna Doone in 1869. The era of publishing in this “three-decker” Victorian era format was also reaching its end, as was, with but a few years left, Queen Victoria herself. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
