Ein Ghetto Im Osten

Zurich: Orell Fussli, 1931. First Edition. Text in Yiddish and German. Publisher’s photo-illustrated boards; minor rubbing; near fine. Illustrated with 65 images, many of them montages, of the ghetto in Vilnius, Lithuania. The photographer, an avant-garde artist who was Bauhaus educated by figures such as Klee, Kandinsky and Albers, held a blunt, unromantic view of life in the city where he had been raised and educated. The people are bundled up against the cold and the buildings are worn and grim, all the more poignant given their disappearance just a few years later with the Nazi invasion. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
