Robert Motherwell edited this series, “the documents of modern art.” Presentation copy; inscribed by the designer, “12/22/44/ To Gene/ Best wishes and regards/ Paul Rand.” This is the designer’s first book, preceded by periodical work; he is credited on the copyright page with the cover design and typography. Rand went on to renown and celebration for his corporate logos, including IBM and Westinghouse. Publisher’s wrappers; minor soiling and foxing; a very good copy. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
