New York: privately published, 1942. Apparently the first illustrated edition; one of 349 numbered copies. Foreword by Dorothy Parker. This copy is signed by Parker (many, perhaps most, are not) and Lillian Hellman, who also inscribed the colophon page “with my warm regards.” Bookplate; slight mend to the top of the spine cloth; very good or slightly better in a mediocre, worn publisher’s slipcase. This deluxe, quarto edition was produced to support anti-fascist causes and victims. The original 1941 production was made into a successful film in 1943 with a Hammett screenplay. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
