The Pretty Alphabet for Good Children

Boston: Phillips and Sampson, n.d. [c. 1846]. Edition undetermined, but the publication year is an estimate based on both the appearance of the book and a dated pencil gift inscription; publisher’s printed and illustrated wrappers; no. 4 in Aunt Mary’s Library for Little Folks; minor spotting and wear; very good. The letters of the alphabet are large and unusually well-colored for a childrens’ book of this period; a printed verse below each one. “I” and “J” share a page, and “Z” is intentionally omitted. The final leaf is “Y” and the exclusion of “Z” is explained by the verse, “Z is the last letter/ Which we have left [out]” That final word is torn from the leaf in this copy, but aside from this loss, damage is confined to a blank, marginal area. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
