Holograph Notes for his early novel Micah Clarke
C. 1885-1887. A total of 42 pages; various sizes; mostly in ink, but with some in pencil; minor soiling and wear; an archive that demonstrates the extensive research and planning that Doyle devoted to his historical novels. This book is set against the invasion of England by James, Duke of Monmouth in 1685, known as Monmouth’s Rebellion. Doyle prepared an outline, “Things to be worked into Micah Clarke,” “Quotations for Micah Clarke,” a long list of locations, detailed sketches of the characters, including dialogue, as well as pages of notes regarding food, dress and furniture of the day. His third book, but his first real commerical success, Micah Clarke sold several thousand copies in its first two years. The earlier A Study in Scarlet was a slow starter, but eventually far outsold this novel. However, he received a 10% royalty on Micah Clarke, while earning a meager £25 for Study. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
