Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1929. First Edition. Owner’s inscription on the front endpaper; a good copy in what is often termed a “second issue” dust jacket. However, this cataloguer notes that terms such as variant, state, printing, and issue are often conflated. A variant might have been printed and issued at the same time, while a second issue would have been published later than what is termed a first issue. Then what is the correct term to apply to this example? “Presumed second issue” at least indicates that this jacket’s publishing history might still want for clarification. It will have to do for now. Yet one more example of publishers and printers caring moore about their revenue and employment than future bibliography. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
