Manuscript Poem and Drawing
Approximately 8 1/2 wide x 12” tall; on off-white paper; undated, but likely from 1914-1920. A color drawing at the top depicts a car and a man sporting a monacle and mustache, in driving costume, looking over three women, each half-chicken and human, one hen-like older figure smiling (clucking?) approvingly at two much younger and comely ones. Below this drawing, in Birch’s hand, is a sonnet entitled “A Song of Nixpence,” noting “The Music comes later.” The poem is a humorous, but lecherous take on cars and “chicks.” Signed in full. Aside from very minor spotting, in excellent condition. Birch enjoyed considerable success decades earlier, but eventually fell out of favor with both the public and publishers.
