The Life and Letters of Lafcadio Hearn. Edited by Elizabeth Bisland

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1906. First Edition; two volumes. One of 200 copies with a page of Hearn manuscript tipped in, which reads: “...house. On the north-east side of it there was a well; and several former tenants had drowned themselves in that well, without any known cause. But Matsumura, being a Shinto priest, had no fear of evil spirits; and he soon made himself comfortable in his new home [typographical note in Hearn’s hand].” This is the finest set we have seen; brilliant copies in the original dust jackets and publisher’s paper-covered cardboard slipcase with printed label. The dust jackets have minor chips and wear and are offset where they touched the inside cardboard of the slipcase. There is minor soiling and edge chipping to the paper covering of the slipcase.
