London: Chapman & Hall, 1882. First Edition. Publisher’s decorated cloth; some wear; hinges broken; a good copy. Inscribed by Kate (signed as “Mamie”) and by her younger sister, who provided illustrations. A clipped, dated signature of the long-dead Dickens is laid in. The book has been signed by an impressive number of figures primarily involved in theatre (an interest of Dickens himself), clearly during two periods: the late 19th and early 20th century, and later in the nineteen-eighties. It is signed by, among others, Barrie, Gerald DuMaurier, Peggy Ashcroft, Alec Guinness, Judi Dench, Emlyn Williams, Maryk Rylance, Ralph Fiennes, and Kenneth Branagh. It is hardly comprehensive, but it is extensive.
