"Living" [published as "What I Call Living"]

Calligraphic 15 line poem on parchment, lavishly illuminated in gilt, red and two shades of blue, signed in ink “Grace Aznive - 1938” at the lower margin. Framed and glazed, approximately 11 1/4 x 15”; the original paper backing of the frame has been preserved with its presentation inscription from Aznive, an art student and teacher in Boston. Beautifully and expertly accomplished, this exceptional piece is remarkably attractive and in excellent condition. Guest was, to damn with faint praise, the Rod McKuen of his day, and his homespun poems sold in the millions. One might look on this piece as a 20th century version of the sampler: charming, sentimental, and colorful, a centerpiece in the modest American home.
