Franklin Pierce, President of the United States from his obliged and grateful friend & servant, Fletcher Webster, Dec 18, 1856.” With bookplates of the Pepperell family and the signature of his nephew Franklin H. Pierce (the likely heir to these) in each volume. Webster served both Massachusetts and New Hampshire in Washington; Pierce was from New Hampshire. Fletcher Webster was killed in 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run.
