An Exceptional Keepsake Album

Undated, but evidently assembled in the 1830s or 1840s. The album itself has a tiny book ticket from a Parisian shop, and is presumably of European origin, although the owner might have been English. It is a remarkable, brilliant example, approximately “8 1/4 x 11,” in full green leather, decorated in gilt and in blind, all edges gilt, “Album” stamped in gilt on the front cover; the bound leaves are in various colors, and not all were employed. These leaves feature 41 pieces of poetry, pencil drawings, watercolors and hand-colored prints, mounted, tipped-in or inserted. The subject matter, sentimental, as well as humorous and serious, varies, as do their sizes, and nearly all are highly accomplished; much beauty and charm lies within these covers, which are exceptionally fresh themselves. This is the best of its kind we’ve seen.
