Front hinge cracked; publisher’s file copy stamp on the front free endpaper and the fore-edge; scattered pencil marks; notations on the list of illustrations, apparently concerning where the plates were printed; still a bright copy in the publisher’s illustrated cloth. In a very good dust jacket which has two tiny location labels on the spine (the jacket spine bears the imprint of Seeley Service & Co.). Included with this copy are various original illustrations used in the publication, including the following: a pen and ink and yellow wash sketch of the illustrations for the front cover and the spine; the color illustration, signed by artist John F. Campbell, appearing at page 184 in the book, depicting Queen Elizabeth knighting Francis Drake, a simpler variation of which is printed in gold on the cloth binding’s front cover; a black & white wash, signed by Campbell, that is reproduced on page 42 of “Fire-Ships;” a black & white wash drawing, signed by Campbell, appearing on page 67, “Capture of an Eskimo,” featuring Sir Martin Frobisher; [With] two copies of a color proof sheet with two illustrations. The two wash drawings and the color drawing are each approximately 7 x 11,” On illustration board.
