Uncle Tom's Cabin

Boston: John P. Jewett, 1852. First Edition; first printing. Two volumes; publisher's cloth. Spine ends strengthened; bookplates removed from front pastedowns; minor staining and foxing; tiny corner clipping on the first leaves of the first volume; a very good set in a custom slipcase with chemises (bookplates on each). Some 3000 copies of the 5000 in the first printing sold on the first day; subsequent printings in the first year totaled 300,000 copies, a stupendous number for its day. Laid into this copy is a quotation from the text in the author’s hand, signed and dated in 1891. She has identified this as from “Uncle Tom’s Cabin. pg. 197 [volume II].” This leaf is a little browned and was removed from backing by a conservator, whose detailed report is included. Certainly 19th century America's most influential work of fiction; Lincoln referred to it as "the book that made this big war."
