The African Queen

Boston: Little, Brown, 1935. First American Edition. Some foxing; very good to fine in a very good dust jacket with some small chips and a tiny archival mend inside the top of the spine. The American and English editions have alternate endings. In the English edition, the Royal Navy sinks the Konigin Luise, and Rose and Allnutt survive to marry; in the American edition, they fail to sink the ship with the African Queen’s torpedo, and Allnutt disappears under the water. To this cataloguer anyway, some movie adaptations forever stamp a novel’s character with the actors who played them. In this case, Rose and Allnut are always Hepburn and Bogart. There are other examples that quickly come to mind: Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, and Basil Rathbone as Holmes are two. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
