ADDAMS, CHARLES
Original Gag Cartoon Drawing
Black and white wash on paper; published in The New Yorker, November 13, 1937. Measuring approximately 10 x 14”, matted, framed and glazed, overall approximately 18 x 21”. The cartoon depicts a conservative-looking older woman (one might characterize her as a “church lady”) seated with a fortune-teller. The caption in the magazine reads, “...and I see, too, a tall blond man, a ship, palm trees, romance, danger - but perhaps I’m boring you.” Signed in ink. While Addams often prepared several preliminary sketches of his cartoons, mostly in pencil, this is the finished, final drawing as it appeared in the magazine. Sometimes he added the caption in pencil at the bottom margin, but not in this example. Among prominent cartoonists, perhaps only James Thurber has been more closely associated with The New Yorker.
