[SUBWAYS]. BEACH, ALFRED E. AND OTHERS
Illustrated Description of the Broadway Underground Pneumatic Railway. With a Full Description of the Atmospheric Machinery and the Great Tunneling Machine
New York:
S.L. Green,
1870.
Publisher’s wrappers. Minor creasing and spotting; an attractive copy of this illustrated account of the building of New York’s earliest subway, literally a dead end, constructed in secret because of disputes with Tammany Hall. It operated for only a short time and over a short distance. Inspired by pneumatic tube systems, now in use mostly at bank drive-up windows, it worked fairly well but would have proved impractical in more extensive use. [Book #19568P]
