Manuscript Notes on The Regency Period

Comprising some 36 plus pages of holograph notes in three notebooks, with diagrams, all in Doyle’s distinctive, readable hand. All but a small section in pencil are in ink. One notebook is titled on the cover “June 1/95. Synopsis of Facts about the Regency. I,” another “Phrases situations...for Regency,” and the third simply “Gully.” Doyle’s research for his historical fiction was as deep and as thorough as that day would allow. At least some of these notes and ideas were employed by Doyle in his 1896 novel Rodney Stone. In addition there are eleven foolscap pages of notes, mostly in an unidentified hand (although there a few notes that appear to be in Doyle’s), much of it having to do with maritime matters, including a deck plan of an 1793 man of war. Aside from the expected tears, dog-eared pages and minor smudges, in excellent condition. These pieces were in the 2004 auction sale of papers from Doyle’s estate.
